MONUMENTS
Maharashtra has been blessed with an immensely rich history. From the Satavahana period to the Vakatakas, Chalukya, Shilahara, Yadavas, Bahamani, and finally the great Maratha Empire, the cultural and political fabric of Maharashtra has been shaped over centuries. The footprints of this history are scattered across the land, visible even today. Throughout these ages, several foreign invaders attacked Maharashtra, and the valiant warriors of this land often laid down their lives to protect it. In the later Maratha period, Maharashtra even bore the responsibility of defending the entire Indian subcontinent.
While traveling through Maharashtra, this history reveals itself in various forms — majestic forts, rock-cut caves etched into the Sahyadri, stunningly crafted temples and stepwell, commemorative hero stones of those who sacrificed themselves for Swarajya, and the memorials of great personalities.
...
These carved monuments, which narrate the saga of valour and heritage, continue to stand resiliently for centuries under the sun and rain.
The term “Vārasa” (heritage), originally of Arabic origin, has naturally blended into our language, while the Sanskrit term “Dāya” carries the same meaning — wealth or inheritance passed down from one’s forefathers. Heritage, therefore, refers to all that is handed down to us by our ancestors, whether tangible or intangible. Though times have changed, these deeply rooted elements continue to influence and inspire society.
It is with this thought that I have attempted, through my website, to introduce these heritage and inspirational sites, cultivating respect and awareness about them. Since I have already presented forts, fortifications, caves, and temples separately, this “Heritage Sites” section primarily includes memorials (Samadhi), hero stones (virgal), battlefields, stepwell (pushkarni and barav), and some unique natural wonders. These are not the result of any exclusive expeditions; rather, I have documented structures that I came across conveniently while exploring nearby forts and sites.
In truth, all such ancient commemorative monuments in Maharashtra need to be preserved, and a consolidated registry must be created to record their locations and the stories of the heroes they represent. Protecting these heritage sites is not merely the duty of the government but also a responsibility of the common people. These memorials, embodying the valour and deeds of our forefathers, are in fact our spiritual sources of inspiration. This humble effort is intended to create awareness about these sacred places of power and to bring their history before everyone in simple words.
