VELNESHWAR
DISTRICT : RATNAGIRI
Velneshwar, a coastal village blessed with natural beauty, is truly a gift of nature. It is one of the prominent tourist spots in Guhagar. The Velneshwar temple and the beach together make this area exceptionally picturesque. Velneshwar is located about 290 km from Mumbai and 306 km from Pune. The distance from Guhagar to Velneshwar is approximately 20 km. While traveling from Chiplun to Guhagar, Velneshwar can be reached by taking a left turn through Modka Agar before reaching Guhagar.
Surrounded by coconut and betel nut plantations, the safe and clean beach along with the soothing sound of waves creates a unique charm for this village. The Velneshwar temple is located right on the seashore.
...
The name ‘Velneshwar’ is derived from the word ‘Vela,’ meaning seashore, signifying the deity residing on the coast or the one who quickly fulfills vows (Navas). The temple’s main sanctum dates back to the 12th century. The temple complex is spacious and features a 24-foot-high Deepmala (lamp tower). Inside the sanctum, there is a three-foot-long Shiva Lingam adorned with a mask of Lord Shankar and a five-hooded serpent. Adjacent to the main shrine are the temples of Kalbhairav, Ganapati, and Lakshmi-Narayan.
Velneshwar beach deserves a special mention for being clean, safe, and serene. The rocky portion of the coastline next to the temple is known as Merumandal. Lined with coconut trees, this expansive beach offers a tranquil atmosphere as it remains relatively uncrowded. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the sea or even take a motorboat for a sea safari.
Accommodation options are available for tourists in the form of homestays and a few hotels in the village. Additionally, Velneshwar Bhakt Niwas offers excellent lodging facilities. This serene and naturally beautiful beach is a must-visit destination at least once in a lifetime.
