REDI
DISTRICT : SINDHUDURG
Wandering through the trails in the valleys of the Sahyadri quenches the thirst for adventure, while wandering along the Konkan coastline soothes the soul. The southernmost village on Maharashtra’s coastline is Redi. Located in the Vengurla taluka, Redi has earned a place on the global tourism map. Besides its historical significance, Redi is also known for its iron ore mines. It is home to the self-manifested (Swayambhu) Ganesh temple. Adjacent to the beach in this very village lies the lesser-known fort named Yashwantgad. Not only is it off the radar of tourists, but even enthusiastic trekkers rarely visit it.
The Redi beach is peaceful, serene, and unspoiled by crowds. There’s a small hotel here offering limited food options. It’s a suitable place to visit with friends or family.
...
Upon reaching Redi and heading toward the beach, one needs a boat to reach the shore during high tide. The locals have made affordable arrangements for this. Walking barefoot on the soft sand under the sun while feeling the salty sea breeze offers a unique sense of joy.
To the left stretches the endless blue expanse of the sea, and to the right lie coconut and betel nut plantations with dense green groves. The sea here is shallow, with small sandy islets formed naturally, making it a safe and ideal spot for wading or swimming. During sunset, one can witness a spectacular view of the sun disappearing into the vast Arabian Sea.
Interestingly, one barely finds Indian tourists here — the visitors are mostly foreigners. Many international tourists are seen enjoying this tranquil shoreline. Some enterprising local Konkani residents, showing sharp business acumen, have built small cottages by the beach to accommodate foreign visitors. It’s undeniable that foreign tourists, thousands of kilometres away, have recognized the value of these beautiful beaches in the Konkan even before many locals have.
The tourists who visit Redi express great satisfaction with the local tourism experience. The Redi coastline is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Its cleanliness surpasses that of many foreign beaches. To maintain this cleanliness permanently, all tourists and locals must remain committed to preserving it. This would ensure better prospects for the local tourism industry.
If, in the future, local authorities and the tourism department work in cooperation with the villagers to provide better amenities for accommodation and food, it’s likely that tourists who otherwise head to Goa will begin staying here. This would generate employment for the locals. However, to provide such comforts and facilities, it is essential for the administration to plan in collaboration with the local people.
The feedback from current tourists speaks volumes about the potential of this place as a tourism destination. Therefore, it is imperative that adequate facilities are developed, especially along the coastline in Redi. With the sound of the rolling sea, the enchanting natural surroundings, and the warm, friendly, and always welcoming Konkani people, one must visit the Redi beach at least once to truly experience it.
