FATTEGAD
TYPE : COASTAL FORT
DISTRICT : RATNAGIRI
HEIGHT : 0
GRADE : EASY
Fattegad is a small sea fort that stands on the shore near Suvarnadurg fort in Ratnagiri district. A short distance away is another fort called Kanakdurg. Three forts, Goa Fort, Kanakdurg, and Fattegad, were built on the beach of Harne village to protect Suvarnadurg. Out of these, Goa Fort and Kanakdurg are still standing but since the Koli people built their houses on the hummock of Fattegad, no remnants of the fort can be found on it. Except for the ramparts on the seafront of Fattegad and the stone bridge between Kanakdurg and Fattegad, no other remains can be seen. The area of this fort should be about 3 acres. According to some historians, Fattegad was built by Kharyat Khan after Shivaji Maharaj’s period, while others believe that both these forts were built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.

After Kanhoji Angre and Manaji Angre, their son, Tulaji Angre took over the forts of Suvarnagad, Goa Fort, Kanakdurg, and Fattegad. After a feud between the Peshwa and Tulaji Angre, a joint force of the Peshwa and the British launched an operation against Tulaji Angre. At that time, Commander James conquered the fort and handed it over to the Peshwas. In 1817, the fort was conquered by the British from the Peshwas. Murud Harne can be reached from Mumbai via Dapoli. There is a straight road from Harne to Kanakdurg. Fattegad is located on the right side of the road, a short distance from Kanakdurg. In a British reference to the year 1862, it is said that both Kanakdurg and Fattegad forts were destroyed.
